Why See Sense and Sensibility?

Musicals

West Coast Premiere

Jane Austen's classic novel is reborn on the San Diego stage as a witty, light-as-a-feather musical. Adapted by Paul Gordon, it marries Austen's tale of The Dashwood Sisters with a lush score that beautifully complements Austen's prose. A show that does full justice to its source material, Sense and Sensibility conjures an enthralling romantic drama without sacrificing any of the novel's social commentary.

Sense and Sensibility received its world premiere last year in Chicago, where it was met with a rapturous response from the critics. The Chicago Sun-Times declared it "pristine", and ready to be "sent to Broadway". This Old Globe production stars Megan McGinnis (Off-Broadway's Daddy Long Legs) and is directed by Artisic Director of the Chicago Shakespeare Company Barbara Gaines.

What is Sense and Sensibility About?

The story centers on a pair of sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, living in late 19th Century England. Elinor is the older and more reserved of the two, while Marianne is a free spirit who pushes against the constraints of polite society. We follow them as they move to a cottage in the countryside with their mother, and meet the various suitors who turn up at their door. Will any of them prove an intellectual match for the girls?
