The Remarkable Story Of The Christmas Ceasefire
The remarkable true story of the 1914 Christmas Truce comes to San Diego this Holiday season, and with it a poignant reminder of the humanity behind the statistics of war and oft forgotten annals of history. A special collaboration between the San Diego Opera, non-profit arts organisation Bhodi Tree Concerts and California-based chamber choir SACRA/PROFANA, the emotionally-charged production has received much critical acclaim for its compassionate and uplifting message of peace.
Performed by 12 actors and singers, the life-affirming a capella piece is told through real poetry, diary entries, letters and war documents, chronicling the special moment when a German soldier stepped out from the trenches into No Man's Land on Christmas Day, 1914, setting off a series of unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front. Soldiers from both sides laid down their arms for a single day, coming together to sing carols and trench songs, exchange gifts and bury their dead.
