Danai Gurira's Poignant Family Dramedy

When not taking undead names on AMC's The Walking Dead or smashing box office records in feature films like The Black Panther and the Avengers franchise, the multi-talented Danai Guriara not only fills theater seats when she treads the Broadway boards but with her very own dramatic works. Following the critically acclaimed success of the Lupita Nyong'o-led heavy-hitter Eclipsed comes Familiar, a familial comedy drama about cultural assimilation, dislocation, tradition, marriage and a family caught between. 

On the surface, Zimbabwean immigrants Donald and his wife Marvelous seem to have it all. Not only do they own a big, beautiful house, but their careers are flourishing and one of their daughters is set to tie the knot. When the bride insists on a traditional Zimbabwean ceremony, cracks in the facade of their American Dream begin to appear...Witty dialogue, empathetic character sketches and lighthearted humour flow into culture clash and new revelations in the second act, and it begins to appear that the happy couple may not make it down the aisle after all.
