Tony-winning playwright Richard Nelson (Chess, James Joyce's The Dead) helms this new production of Chekhov's timeless tragicomedy. Commissioned by The Old Globe, this new translation comes courtesy of Nelson, as well as Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, two of the most respected translators of the Russian classics in the world.
First performed in Moscow in 1899, Uncle Vanya deals in Chekhov's favorite theme, that of a wasted life, with many of the characters consumed by a melancholia as they ponder what might have been. The plot follows the fortunes of a once feted professor whose career and health are in decline as he embarks on early retirement to the estate of his late first wife.
Written by Anton Chekhov
