The first world premiere of San Diego's Old Globe's new season, American Mariachi is a vibrant ode to self empowerment and living for the moment. Written by Jose Cruz Gonzalez (Sunsets and Margaritas, The Blue House), and set in the 1970s, the story centers on young girl Lucha who spends her days caring for her sick mother. Longing for a change, she concocts a plan to start an all-girl mariachi band along with her cousin. However, it's an idea that flies in the face of tradition, and the girls must fight against disapproving relatives and the cultural status quo to realise their dream.
Brimming with heart and laughs, American Mariachi features a glorious Mariachi-infused score played live. This production is directed by James Vasquez.
