Handbags at the ready for Oscar Wilde's fabulous comedy
There's more witticisms than you can shake a handbag at in the Old Globe's new production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. A dazzlingly written comedy of manners, injected with moments of broad farce, Earnest is the perfect showcase for Wilde's favorite past-time - deconstructing the rules of polite Victorian society. First performed in London in 1885, it has since become part of the theatrical canon, and has been adapted for the big screen countless times.
The story follows the exploits of bachelors Jack and Algernon, who both use pseudonyms (Earnest and Bunbury respectively) to get them out of various scrapes and tight spots. They're charades comes back to bite them when, in their efforts to land two lovely ladies, the fictitious Earnest and Bunbury prove to be more popular than they are!
