Why see California Ballet: Giselle?
The perils of love...
Since it's debut in Paris in 1841, Giselle Ou Les Wilis has inspired ballet, with the Pepita choreography creating a magical escape for enamoured audiences. Poor Giselle is the afflicted young girl who falls for the wrong man and pays the ultimate price. But when given another chance, will she able to exact her revenge. Presented by the California Ballet Company. What the story of Giselle?
With music from Adolphe Adam and a liberetto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Theophile Gautier, Giselle Ou Les Wilis is the sad tale of Giselle, a young, fragile village girl who falls for seemingly the perfect man. She is besotted by his mysterious character and upon his unmasking as a betrothed Duke, she dies tragically.
But Giselle's story does not end there. From her grave, she is summed by the Queen of the Wilis, the ethereal Myrtha and indoctrinated into the fantasy coven of women who lead men to their deaths via the medium of dance. But will Giselle be able to kill the Duke? Or will her love for him transcend the power of evil.
