The Broadway musical about the life of the legendary singing rabbi
First opening on Broadway in late 2013, Soul Doctor tells the astounding story of Shlomo Carlebach the singing rabbi. Featuring a book by original director Daniel S. Wise, lyrics by David Schechter and the songs of the enigmatic figure himself, the fascinating musical straddles the divergent worlds of Nazi occupied Austria and the free love of 1960s New York & San Francisco, chronicling Shlomo's inspiring journey.
As a child, the young Shlomo witnesses the execution of a Jewish musician in the streets of Vienna at the hands of a Nazi soldier. When his family moves to NYC to escape persecution, this event stays with Shlomo as he grows up, and he vows to be an advocate for freedom of expression through music. On the path to become a rabbi like his father, Shlomo breaks with tradition and takes up the guitar, a decision that sees the muso befriend the one and only Nina Simone. When he later moves to San Francisco, he fuses the optimism and warmth of the flower power generation with his Jewish faith, becoming an unlikely pop phenomenon in the process.
