La Cage Aux Folles

This is Jerry Herman's best musical yet -happier, more assertive, more buoyant than Hello Dolly! or Mame.

Why see La Cage Aux Folles?
THE BROADWAY HIT SEES A SAN DIEGO REVIVAL!
Outrageously funny, dynamic and joyful, "La Cage" remains one of the most socially relevant musicals since premiering on Broadway in 1983 and its constant revivals ensure that new generations of fans fall in love with it time and time again.
Nominated for nine Tony Award nominations, winning a total of six including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, it also won three Drama Desk Awards. La Cage ran four a total of four years, ending its Broadway run in November 1987, before a West End production was announced.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Think of it as a cross between "Look Who's Coming To Dinner" and "Meet The Parents", with a little of "Mrs Doubtfire" thrown in. In fact, those three films owe much to their success to this story. Georges and Albin are two happily co-habiting men who run a successful cabaret nightclub in the exclusive St Tropez, living with their "maid" Jacob.
One day Georges' son Jean-Michel (from an early tryst with a woman, Sylvia) appears, to tell his parents that he is getting married. The only problem is that this fiancee's parents are uber conservative politicians, her dad being head of the local Tradition, Family and Morality Party - strictly opposed to drag clubs and homosexuality. Terrified at the prospect of Anne's parents discovering his unusual background, Jean-Michel tries to strongarm the flamboyant Albin (who has been his mother all these years) into appearing as an uncle instead.
The charade continues with an upset Albin and concerned Georges, until an unfortunate sing along in a restaurant with Anne's family lead them to discover the truth about Jean Michel's family. Can Albin forgive Jean-Michel for being ashamed of him, and will he be able to hold on to Anne? Welcome to La Cage - where nothing is as it seems.
